As with my design work, eating and deadlines are always a good motivator. I’ve never missed a deadline in my life, but I look forward to my first one. Everyone should have a missed deadline at some point in their lives. On top of all that, when it is the school holidays, things become even harder. A few weeks back, during the school Easter holidays, I fell so far behind my writing commitments that I am only now just recovering. A teacher once told my class that we needed to be kind to those we met on the way up the ladder, because we would meet them on the way down.
Contacting people you think would be a good author for Smashing within your subject area, aiming to bring new and diverse voices rather than always the same names. Include links to other writing, and details of your own expertise. We would like to see an outline initially, rather than a complete article. One of them was to introduce sponsored content, which you have probably noticed by now. Sponsored content still goes through editorial review and proofreading before getting published. We had many internal discussions, arguing for and against it, and I’ve always been firmly opposed to it, but we decided to try it out on a small scale. Still, unless we’re willing to run a massive amount of sponsored content on the website, it won’t make up for the drop in revenue from banner advertisements.
