We follow up at the end of the month to ensure that every author has submitted an invoice. Paying is a matter of principle and respect — respect for their time, effort, work and dedication. We work as a team and you can always ask for advice about an article you are working on. Ensuring the article is complete with all the elements we need for publication before sending it for final review. Press releases, listicles, and product reviews are unlikely to be interesting to us or our readers.

We read each email and regularly answer inside one business day.

Through our articles, digital books, job openings, conferences and membership, we are committed to nourishing productivity, improving design and development skills and finessing the work-life balance. Getting better, together, by learning from each other — that’s the spirit that has been our mantra for all these years. We respect the rights of authors, designers, photographers and developers.

As with my design work, eating and deadlines are always a good motivator. I’ve never missed a deadline in my life, but I look forward to my first one. Everyone should have a missed deadline at some point in their lives. On top of all that, when it is the school holidays, things become even harder. A few weeks back, during the school Easter holidays, I fell so far behind my writing commitments that I am only now just recovering. A teacher once told my class that we needed to be kind to those we met on the way up the ladder, because we would meet them on the way down.

Contacting people you think would be a good author for Smashing within your subject area, aiming to bring new and diverse voices rather than always the same names. Include links to other writing, and details of your own expertise. We would like to see an outline initially, rather than a complete article. We can often help authors to refine their outline to something we can accept, when had they sent the completed piece to us, we would have rejected it. You can read some detailed information about pitching, and why we ask for an outline in this article.

One of them was to introduce sponsored content, which you have probably noticed by now. Sponsored content still goes through editorial review and proofreading before getting published. We had many internal discussions, arguing for and against it, and I’ve always been firmly opposed to it, but we decided to try it out on a small scale. Still, unless we’re willing to run a massive amount of sponsored content on the website, it won’t make up for the drop in revenue from banner advertisements.

We’re always glad to make new contacts and explore new possibilities. If you’re interested in publishing sponsored content on Smashing Magazine, please feel free to get in touch with Iris, Markus, and Vitaly of the Smashing Editorial at anytime. We will be sure to get back to you within 1-2 working days. The articles are not advertisements per se, but rather true actionable how-tos and case studies that focus on specific products or services approved by our editorial team. Founded in September 2006 in Germany, Smashing Magazine delivers reliable, useful, but most importantly practical articles to web designers and developers. We don’t care about trends; we care about things that work or fail in actual projects.

As we began to learn so much from the community, we decided that we had found our proverbial home and that we really wanted to give back. I began to shift my writing style to fit the Web more, and I may still have some work to do in that arena. I know that no matter the medium, my poetic nature tends to add a flourish or two to the text. provides a large collection of English as a Second Language tools & resources for students, teachers, learners and academics.
